چکیده

Scaling theory describing the conformations of weakly charged star-branched polyelectrolytes in dilute and semi-dilute salt-free solutions is developed. The dependence of the star size on the number of branches as well as on the solution concentration is analyzed. It is shown that the star size increases with an increase in the number of branches, f, at small f and tends to a constant value at large f. An increase in the concentration of stars in a solution results in a decrease in the star size R according to the

Conformations and interactions of star-branched polyelectrolytes.

Combining monomer-resolved molecular dynamics simulations with a theory based on a variational free energy, we calculate the conformational properties and the effective interactions of star-branched polyelectrolytes for a large variety of arm numbers, degrees of polymerization, and charge fractions, with and without added salt. We find quantitative agreement between theory and simulation and pu...

Computer simulations of polyelectrolyte stars and brushes

We briefly review results pertaining to the conformations, interactions and phase behavior of two related soft matter systems: star-branched polyelectrolytes and spherical polyelectrolyte brushes. Moreover, we present new results on the complexation of stars with oppositely charged, spherical, hard colloids, demonstrating the versatility of these systems to form novel complexes that result in a...

Fluid-fluid demixing transitions in colloid-polyelectrolyte star mixtures.

We derive effective interaction potentials between hard, spherical colloidal particles and star-branched polyelectrolytes of various functionalities f and smaller size than the colloids. The effective interactions are based on a Derjaguin-like approximation, which is based on previously derived potentials acting between polyelectrolyte stars and planar walls. On the basis of these interactions...

Evaluation of the Performance of Dual Polyelectrolyte Systems on the Re-Flocculation Ability of Calcium Carbonate Aggregates in Turbulent Environment

Flocculation can be used in turbulent environments resulting in floc breakage due to shearing. The degree of re-flocculation relates directly to product quality and process efficiency. This study aimed at looking for alternatives to improve the re-flocculation ability of aggregates when polyelectrolytes (PEL) are used as flocculation agents. Moreover, because branched PEL have proved previously...
